Trade Compliance Workspaces

A trade compliance workspace is a focused space for analyzing a set of products against a single import destination. Once you create a workspace, Altana runs each enabled lens across your products so you can review its findings, confirm or correct them, and get your products ready for trade.

Creating a workspace

  1. Make sure the products you want are in your product catalog.
  2. Open GTM Workspace and select Create Workspace.
  3. Name the workspace and choose its import destination.
  4. Select the products to include.
  5. Choose which lenses to enable (for example HS Classification, Country of Origin, USMCA, Duties, and Section 232).
  6. Create the workspace. Altana begins analyzing your products across the enabled lenses.

Understanding the workspace layout

When you open a workspace, you will see:

  • The header, showing the workspace name and the number of products it contains.
  • The lens tabs, one tab for each lens enabled when the workspace was created. Each lens analyzes your products from a different trade angle.
  • The product table, which fills the main area. Each row is one of your products, and the columns show that lens's findings for it.

You move between lenses by clicking the tabs. Your products stay the same across every lens: each tab simply shows a different analysis of the same set.

How to work a lens

Every lens works the same way, so once you learn one you can work them all. In each lens, Altana shows its suggestion for the attribute (for example, a predicted HS code or country of origin) with a confidence level, your current or declared value, and whether the two agree. Your job is to confirm or correct each product.

Follow the same five steps in any lens:

  1. Open the lens. Click its tab. Your products load into the table, with Altana's finding shown in each row.
  2. Filter to what needs attention. Use the status filters above the table (such as Needs Review) to set aside the products that are already settled and focus on the ones that need you.
  3. Clear the easy wins in bulk. Select the high-confidence results and use the bulk action (for example, Bulk Confirm High-Confidence Suggestions) to accept them together instead of one at a time.
  4. Review the rest individually. Click a product row to open its detail panel on the right, then Accept Altana's suggestion, Override it with your own value and a note, Assign it to a teammate, or Rerun analysis if the inputs have changed.
  5. Finish the lens. Keep going until every product has moved out of Needs Review into a confirmed state. Confirmed values save to the product profile and feed the lenses downstream.

How the lenses work together

The lenses build on each other, so it helps to work them in order:

  1. Start with HS Classification. A confirmed HS code is the foundation for everything else: Country of Origin, Section 232, USMCA, and Duties all read it.
  2. Then Country of Origin and Section 232, which both rely on the HS code.
  3. Then USMCA, which uses the country of origin and your cost data.
  4. Finally Duties, which combines all of the above into a single stacked rate.

Because of this, a product may show Insufficient Data or Not Required in a downstream lens until its upstream inputs are in place. That is expected: it is the workspace telling you what to complete next, not an error.

The lenses

Each lens has its own guide:

  • HS Classification: assign each product its HS code, the foundation for every other lens.
  • Country of Origin: determine where each product originates.
  • USMCA: check whether a product qualifies for preferential treatment.
  • Duties: see the stacked duty owed on each product.
  • Section 232: assess metals and materials exposure.
  • PGA: review partner government agency requirements.
  • Audit Log: see the history of changes in the workspace.

Managing your workspace

From the workspace list, use the menu on a workspace card to edit or delete it. Editing lets you change the workspace name, add or remove products, change the import destination, or change which lenses are enabled.

Key details

  • Import destination support varies by lens. HS Classification covers 153 countries (32 of them classified to full national tariff depth). Country of Origin, Duties, USMCA, and Section 232 apply to a United States import destination.
  • Product limits depend on your lenses. Workspaces built on the HS Classification, Country of Origin, and Duties lenses support up to 100,000 products. Adding the USMCA or Section 232 lens caps the workspace at 1,000 products.
  • Results depend on your data. Each lens needs certain inputs (a confirmed HS code, value chain data, cost data, and so on). When something is missing, the lens shows Insufficient Data or Not Required rather than guessing. That is the workspace pointing you to what to complete, not a failure.
  • Confidence levels are a guide, not a decision. A high-confidence suggestion is still a suggestion. You remain in control of every confirmed value.
  • Your work is tracked. Confirmations, overrides, and notes are recorded so you and your team have a clear audit trail of every decision.
