Country of Origin Lens

The Country of Origin lens determines where each product originates, using rules-of-origin analysis on your value chain and component data. It depends on a confirmed HS code, and its result feeds the Duties lens. Country of origin is determined against US rules of origin.

How it works

Altana works through the standard rules-of-origin logic to reach a single country of origin:

• Wholly obtained or exclusively originating. If a product is produced entirely in, or entirely from materials of, one country, that country is the origin.
• Tariff shift (substantial transformation). Otherwise, Altana checks whether the non-originating materials undergo the required change in tariff classification for the product, including any small-content (de minimis) allowance.
• Essential character. When a tariff shift is not met, Altana determines origin from the material that gives the product its essential character (the most functionally important material, or the highest-value one when materials are otherwise comparable).

Each determination comes with the rule that was applied and a confidence level, so you can see why a country was chosen.

How to use it

The table shows Altana's determined country of origin next to your declared value, whether the two agree, and a confidence level. Common results include Originating, Requires Review, Not Originating, No Product-Specific Rule, and Insufficient Data.

1. Filter to the products that need attention.
2. Open a product to review the rule that was applied and the materials and suppliers behind it.
3. Accept Altana's determination or override it with your own, adding a note for the record.

Products that involve restricted materials are flagged for extra attention. Products without enough value chain data show Insufficient Data, which tells you what to gather rather than guessing an origin.

Requesting information from suppliers

When a product is missing the value chain or material data the lens needs, you can request it directly from a supplier you work with, rather than chasing it offline. From a product, send a request to a direct supplier; their response flows back into the lens so the determination can run.

FAQ

What does Country of Origin need to run? A confirmed HS code and your value chain data: the product's input materials (each with its own HS code, country of origin, and value) and supplier information.

Why does a product show Insufficient Data? Its value chain is incomplete (for example, missing materials or material origins). Add the missing data and rerun.

What are restricted materials? Materials Altana flags as needing closer attention in the origin analysis; review them before accepting a determination.
